Singleton : "Our music is emotional, groovy, and life-asserting"

1. Could you tell us a little more about your artist name and your debut as an band ?

Initially, it was our guitarist Jim who came with an idea to name our band Singleton. He is a programmer and "singleton" is the name of one of the programming patterns. And he thought that this word sounds really good for a band name. We agreed. But basically, Singleton is just a common English word that means "being one of a kind", also "being alone". So we liked how the word sounds and what it means. That's a nice combination.

Our band started in 2004, that's nearly 10 years now. We are people who loved the same music, just gathered together and started to create our own :)

2. How would you define your music in 5 adjectives and who are your main influences?

Our music is emotional, true, groovy, melodic, life-asserting. As for our main influences, they are Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, Placebo, Editors, U2, The Music, The National.

3. You just released your album on Jamendo. What stories and messages are you trying to convey through it ?

It is a very personal album, but at the same time, I'm sure the stories we share in our songs will be familiar to lots of our listeners. As it is all about feelings, emotions, love, friends, relations and choices we make everyday.

5. What would be your best advice on how to compose a song and what’s your favorite part of the songwriting process?

The best songs usually are coming occasionally, but you need to be prepared for this. So you always need to be in the creative state and ready to catch the new tune coming to your mind.

6. What’s your favorite song to belt out in your car/shower/bedroom, at the bar or for karaoke?

When we are gathering with our friends, have some wine and feel like now it's time for singing, we usually choose something from The Beatles or Oasis, as their songs have great melodies and usually they are perfect sing-alongs :)

7. You chose to share your music for free under Creative Commons licenses on Jamendo. Why did you make this decision?

We tried Jamendo with our debut EP "Storms" several years ago and the results were amazing! We got lots of feedback, reviews etc. And we understood that Creative Commons give young musicians an incredible opportunity to be heard. So we decided to release our debut album "The High Seas" and a recently released album "Uncovered" under Creative Commons as well, as we believe this is a really great way to distribute your music.
