Formed in 2000 by Gordo and Mike, they were soon met up by Mik the bassist and Ozi on the drums. This October they celebrate the 10th anniversary of their album Time & Place which got quite a neat success on Jamendo Music.
Hey, it’s great to have you on Jamendo Music! First, could you briefly introduce yourselves
Hi, thanks so much for having us on Jamendo, we love the site! We are Kinematic, a four piece independent band from Melbourne, Australia.
Could you explain to our readers your band name “Kinematic”?
Kinematic is a physics term, used to describe motion, it’s a bit nerdy, but we liked it because musically we’re always trying to change and evolve. We’re also quite nerdy anyway.
What are your main influences and how do you find inspiration when composing a song
We each have our own favourites, but the bands that we all like would include Wilco, Elbow, Death Cab for Cutie and The Beatles.
For us, the best inspiration for writing comes from hearing something great, that you’re not already familiar with. It doesn’t matter if it’s old or new, just as long as it makes you sit up and want to write.
How important is it for you to manage your music yourself and be independent?
We value our independence highly! We do everything ourselves from the writing stage, to recording, all the way to the final marketing and promotion of our music.
It’s important because it gives us full creative control, so for example if we want to have a nine minute song on our album we don’t have to argue with anyone (apart from ourselves). Or if we want to take a break for a few months to recharge, we can.
However, while it’s great being independent, sometimes a bit of outside expertise can be just what’s needed.
We’d love to see you perform live! Do you have any memorable stage moment you’d like to share?
We love playing live and we’ve had some memorable times on stage over the years. Playing live on national radio in Australia was a big highlight, along with playing festival shows. Some less glamorous but still memorable moments include members falling off stage, falling through stage… and one member even tore his pants while walking out on stage, now that’s memorable!
